Understanding timestamps
Qualified vs non-qualified timestamps
Under eIDAS, electronic timestamps come in two levels. A non-qualified timestamp provides a reliable link between data and a point in time, while a qualified timestamp carries the full legal presumption of accuracy across all EU member states.
Our tool provides non-qualified timestamps using RFC 3161 from a trusted TSA. Qualified timestamp support, issued by an EU-certified Qualified Trust Service Provider, is also available.
Non-qualified
Standard timestamp
- RFC 3161 compliant
- Admissible as evidence in court
- Issued by a trusted TSA
- Suitable for most business use cases
Qualified
eIDAS qualified timestamp
- Everything in non-qualified, plus:
- Legal presumption of accuracy across all EU states
- Issued by a Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP)
- Highest level of legal certainty under eIDAS
